Knecker images

Hello all,

With the necker images, could we possibly upload them with better titles? (It'll also help us move up Google searches!). I'm thinking either something like Red and Blue striped Knecker, or, even better, xxx Scout Troop's Knecker!

Bluegoblin7 20:37, 2 April 2008 (EEST)

Hello BG7,
I don't think it is a good idea, because that way anybody can see and use the necker as well. If a French renames its necker "foulard_bleu_et_blanc.svg", you won't understand what it means, and it will be worst if an Italian names it "Sciarpa della Bologna 3 AGESCI.svg" … And if that's the same colors as your own neckerchief, you won't like it to be named after this Italian troop. So if we keep with colors it's OK for everybody.
Keeping the NeckGen's names allows you to keep from uploading twice the same necker, too. Akela -Haooow ! 21:03, 2 April 2008 (EEST)
Hmm... i'm not convinced. Surely it wouldn't matter if it was uploaded twice? We could always perform a merge and rename to a generic one.
If someone is going to Google search a specific knecker, they're not going to use HEX colours, they'll use the names. Also, what about users who come here looking for their knecker, but have no idea about the codes - they're not all computer people!
Permission to show you what I mean, and if it gets screwed up, i'll revert?

I believe we have a way around it. Thankyou. Bluegoblin7 16:22, 1 June 2008 (EEST)

Template:Info in Special:Upload

How have you inserted the template:Info in Special:Upload in toolbox? I'd like to insert it in it.scoutwiki because no one insert copyright of the images. So, uploading automatically this template they maybe insert it :) --Mikethekinslayer 18:36, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Take a look at MediaWiki:Sidebar --egel 19:21, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, but there is a second "Upload a file" in the box under the research one. How have you inserted the template:Info there? --Mikethekinslayer 16:21, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Supposing that a late answer is better than no answer : it's a setting that's done through a .php configuration file on the server. To get it done for IT, ask ZeiP on IRC or by mailing to techies(at)scoutwiki(dot)org Akela -Haooow ! 21:01, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Reformation for Best image

Instead of creating new pages, why don't we use a template such as:

|January =
|February =
|March =
|April =
|May =
|June =
|July =
|August =
|September =
|October =
|November =
|December =

Every year the template will be changed and in discussion page there will by a cron of the image displayed. --Mikethekinslayer 13:46, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, quite good idea. The current template system had been created by BlueGoblin7 a good while ago and it would be a really good idea to improve it. But I think it'd be better to allow people to use various widths for the images, as some may be vertical and other horizontal etc. We could even think of a template who would change years all by itself, but it's perhaps better, as we don't have that much good images, to go on cyclically and start again in January with the same image than the previous year. In that case, nothing'd keep us from changing an image from time to time if needed. Akela -Haooow ! 21:01, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Has this Best Image/Image of the Month been updated since 2009 (see above)? I can't seem to find the page for electing new candidates... --Medic 13:07, 14 August 2013 (EEST)

What wold it be if there is in ScoutMedia the gadget HotCat? I'd like to insert it there in order to add categories faster. --Mikethekinslayer 16:46, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

The file has no extension (like ".jpg").

Hello, I have this error every time I want to upload a picture. Of course my pictures have extensions…

Upload file Upload warning The file has no extension (like ".jpg").

Any solution ? Thanks Albatros 11:18, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Images from Wikimedia Commons

Hiya. I've considered "stealing" a few images from [Wikimedia Commons], where images are uploaded under free licenses similiar to our own. That leaves me thinking that importing such images should be fairly straight forward... Except that the license requires the original author be credited. Do we have an established procedure to allow for this? Or could/should we create one? Regards, --Medic (talk) 11:04, 12 January 2014 (EET)

Naming categories

Hullo. I've had a go at categorizing a few images today, and while doing that I've moved Category:Belt to Category:Belts, as I believed the plural to be standard when naming categories (as I'm used to from both Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and da.scoutwiki). However, as I explored the category tree further I've noticed that quite a few categories are named in the singular, whilst many others are named in the plural. Thus, I doubt if there is consensus in the naming of categories. Can anyone help me as to what best practice is on ScoutMedia? Or, if one doesn't exist... should we agree on a way of naming categories, so as to stave off confusion later on? Regards, --Medic (talk) 08:04, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Remove BAN on Scout Blogs

ScoutWiki is the only Wiki forum that I know of that prohibits links to "Blogs". A classic example is that you cannot link to BSA's all important "Bryan On Scouting", their official website for the latest news releases and approved scouting ideas. All because they have "blog" in their URL.

Many other scout leaders use "Blogs" to share their great scouting ideas. The polite and professional scouting thing to do is to let us link directly to the authoritative reference source. MainTour (talk) 17:33, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Application for administrator tools

I have spent the last few months categorizing our pictures. More than a third of them weren't in the category structure and therefor hard to find. I am not quite done, there is still work to do and structural changes to adapt. I have reached a point where it makes sense to have more tools in the toolbox - for instance the possibility to delete old categories not in use anymore. In lack of a 'village pump' or 'campfire', I apply for adminship here. I've left a notice on Slack as well.--Jørgen (talk) 13:50, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
